Wasp Pest control
Sign of presence
Presence of nests
Wasps build their nests in sheltered places such as attics, gutters, trees or under roof ledges. Nests often resemble cardboard structures, varying in size depending on the colony. If you spot an active nest, it’s an indication that the colony is well advanced, and requires rapid intervention.
Increased wasp activity
Seeing several wasps flying around your home or garden is a telltale sign. They may be particularly attracted to sweet foods, garbage or flowers. Increased activity near windows, doors or in certain nooks and crannies often indicates that a nest is nearby.
Buzzing noises
Wasps produce a distinctive buzzing sound when they’re active. If you hear this noise near walls, ceilings or sheltered outdoor spaces, it may indicate the presence of a nest in or near your property.
Coming and going in the same places
The constant coming and going of wasps in a specific place, such as a crack in a wall, a hole in the ground or a gutter, is a clear sign that a nest is nearby. Observe their trajectories to locate their hiding place.
Aggressive behavior
Wasps become aggressive when they feel their nest is threatened. If you notice wasps chasing or stinging you unexpectedly, this may indicate that you are too close to their territory.
Prevention
Caulking
Inspect your home for cracks, holes or other openings that could provide access for wasps. Seal them with caulk, putty or metal grills to block their passage.
Keep food sources away
Wasps are attracted to sweet, high-protein foods. Keep food in airtight containers when eating out, and clean up leftover food, spilled drinks or crumbs immediately.
Conservation
Mice can easily gain access to soft packaging such as cardboard or thin plastic. To avoid this, store your foodstuffs in airtight containers, such as glass jars or metal cans. Adopt this practice for both dry foods (pasta, cereals, flour) and fresh produce left on the counter, such as bread or fruit.
Waste management
Use garbage cans with tight-fitting lids to avoid attracting wasps. Clean your waste bins regularly to eliminate any odorous residues that might attract them.
Traps
Wasp traps can be used to capture these insects and limit their population. Place these traps away from areas where you spend time to avoid interactions with wasps.
Vegetation maintenance
Prune trees, shrubs and hedges to reduce the number of places where wasps can build their nests. Avoid leaving branches or piles of wood near your home, as these materials provide ideal shelter.
