The woodchuck (Marmota monax), also known as the whistler, is a large rodent that burrows deep under foundations, terraces and stairs. Its burrows can weaken foundation structures and cause major damage to gardens and lawns. It hibernates from November to March.

How to identify it

Large, stocky rodent, 40 to 65 cm long, with a short, bushy tail (15 cm). Dark brown coat, broad, flattened head. Can weigh up to 5 kg in autumn before hibernation.
