Bird – Moderate risk
Rock pigeon
The rock pigeon (Columba livia) is the most common urban pest in Quebec. It makes its home on roofs, windowsills, air vents and building structures, where it can cause significant damage and pose a health hazard. Its droppings are corrosive and can rapidly deteriorate structures.

§4What to look out for
Signs of infestation
- Abundant droppings on ledges, roofs and facades
- Rudimentary nests on cornices
- Pigeons perched regularly on the same structures
- Visible damage to siding and gutters
- Persistent cooing noise
§5Why act fast
Risks
- Corrosive droppings that damage facades, roofs and structures
- Risk of diseases: histoplasmosis, psittacosis, salmonellosis
- Obstruction of gutters and vents by nests
- Parasites (mites, fleas) associated with nests
§6Prevention
How to avoid it
- Install anti-perch devices (spikes, wires, nets)
- Block access to nesting areas
- Do not feed pigeons
- Regularly clean and disinfect droppings areas
- Treat attraction zones with approved repellents

Frequently asked questions
Are pigeon spikes effective?
Yes, if they cover all roosting surfaces. Just one unprotected space is enough for pigeons to return.
Can you remove nests yourself?
Yes, but with protective equipment (mask, gloves) as the nests may contain parasites and pathogens.
Are there effective non-lethal solutions?
Yes – exclusion nets, taut wires, spikes and repellent gels are effective if properly installed.
React quickly, sleep well.
The longer the infestation lasts, the more expensive it becomes.
