House Spider
The house spider is the most common spider found inside homes in Quebec. Virtually harmless to humans, it feeds on pest insects and helps maintain the ecological balance of the home. However, large numbers of them may indicate an underlying infestation of other insects.
§1Distinctive features
How to identify it
Slender, elongated body measuring 6 to 10 mm, with long, slender legs that can span up to 5 cm. Color ranges from translucent beige to light brown. Builds an irregular web, in a disorderly sheet-like pattern, often in corners. Exhibits a characteristic vibrating movement when approached.

Frequently asked questions
Are spiders in Quebec dangerous?
No. No spider species found in Quebec is deadly to humans. The vast majority do not bite, and those that do cause only a minor local reaction.
Why are there so many spiders in my house?
A large population generally indicates an abundance of insect prey (flies, mosquitoes, small beetles). Controlling the source of insects naturally reduces the spider population.
Do we really need to exterminate spiders?
Not necessarily. They are beneficial in reasonable amounts. Professional help is recommended if their number becomes excessive or in cases of severe phobia.
React quickly, sleep well.
The longer the infestation lasts, the more expensive it becomes.
