Pavement ant
Forms small sand mounds between paving stones and along foundations, and gets in through cracks in the slab.
Black ant
The most common species in Quebec: colonies under stones, slabs and along foundations.
Odorous house ant
Gives off a smell of rotten coconut when crushed; loves sweet foods.
Pharaoh ant
Tiny and active 12 months a year; treated mainly with baits, never with a repellent spray.
Red-headed ant
Recognizable by its reddish head; can nest in wood softened by moisture.
Winged ant
Winged reproductives appear in spring, a sign of a mature colony nearby.
