Bats
Bats are the only flying mammals. In Quebec, the most common species near homes are the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) and the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus). Although essential to the ecosystem (insect predators), they can settle in attics and represent a risk of rabies transmission.

How to identify it
Small mammal with membranous wings. Brown body, 4 to 13 cm depending on species. Small to medium-sized ears. Rapid, erratic flight, especially at dusk and dawn.

Where to find it
It roosts in attics, spaces under shingles, behind siding and in walls. Summer colonies of females (nurseries) can number several hundred.

Without intervention, an infestation can double in size in just a few weeks.

Signs of infestation
- Bats flying in or around the house at dusk
- Urine stains and black droppings under entry points
- Ammonia smell in attic (accumulated guano)
- Scratching and chirping in the walls at dusk
- Greasy stains around entry cracks
