The housefly is the most common flying insect found in homes in Quebec. Attracted to trash and food, it reproduces rapidly and can carry many germs from one surface to another.

How to identify it
A small fly, 6 to 7 mm long, with a gray body bearing four black longitudinal stripes on the thorax. It has prominent red eyes, translucent wings, and a yellowish abdomen on the sides. It moves in short flights and often lands on surfaces.

Where to find it
It can be found anywhere there is food or waste: kitchens, trash cans, countertops, ripe fruit, and animal carcasses. It enters through poorly secured doors and windows and lays its eggs in decaying organic matter.
