Pest Control
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC
Pests in your home, your rental unit or your business in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu?
MW Extermination works across all five sectors of the city, from Vieux-Saint-Jean to Saint-Athanase, with technicians holding CD5 and C5 pesticide permits, an assessment and a written guarantee offered depending on the treatment chosen.
Here, geography decides everything. A navigable river, a historic canal with its nine locks, an intensive farming plain and a heritage core built in wood: four distinct corridors through which pests enter buildings, and four different ways to stop them.

Why Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is a case of its own
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu does not have one pest profile, it has four, and they are not treated the same way.
Water, on two fronts. The Richelieu runs through the city from south to north and the Chambly Canal borders it to the west along nine locks. Soft banks, marinas, docks and basins give the Norway rat exactly what it looks for: soil to dig in, permanent water and waste within reach. Spring floods drown the bank burrows and push the colonies toward the basements of Vieux-Saint-Jean and Iberville. This is a matter of calendar, not chance: you seal before the flood, not after.
A heritage core built in wood. Between rue Richelieu, rue Saint-Jacques and boulevard du Seminaire, a large share of the building stock dates from the 19th century. Solid wood, added sunrooms, galleries and thresholds exposed to river humidity: the carpenter ant parent nest settles in a water-soaked beam, often several metres from the point where the workers are seen. A spray applied along the visible trail solves nothing.
A farming plain that empties every fall. L’Acadie, Saint-Athanase and the ranges of the Haut-Richelieu are under field crops. As the corn and soybean harvests end, voles and field mice lose their cover within days. Elsewhere they move to a neighbouring field. In Saint-Luc, where residential developments are spreading over former farmland, they enter new houses, almost always through a plumbing or electrical passage that was never sealed.
Rental and commercial density downtown. Apartments above the shops on rue Richelieu, plexes, seniors’ residences, restaurants, plus the garrison, the Royal Military College and the warehouses along the Highway 35 corridor. Shared walls and common service chases: a cockroach or a bed bug never stays in a single unit. These cases are treated building by building, not unit by unit.
Our work in the
neighbourhoods of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu
& rue Richelieu
The heritage building stock downtown, often a century old, piles up wooden frames dampened by the nearby river: it is the preferred ground of the carpenter ant. The concentration of restaurants and apartments above the shops on rue Richelieu keeps up a constant pressure of cockroaches and mice at the same time, moving from one unit to the next through the shared walls.
& the banks of the Richelieu
On the east bank, the older neighbourhoods of Iberville run right down to the river. Norway rats burrow along the banks there and come up through drains and crawl spaces, especially after the spring flood and after heavy summer storms. The attics of the houses on 3e Rue and the nearby streets also get their share of bats.
& recent developments
Saint-Luc is spreading over former farmland. Every new neighbourhood takes habitat away from field mice, groundhogs and garter snakes, which fall back on garages, sheds and the voids under galleries. In new houses the entry point is almost always the same: a plumbing or electrical passage that was never sealed.
& Saint-Athanase
In farm country, the corn and soybean harvests set off a wave of rodents toward homes and farm buildings every fall. Barns, silos and sheds call for a different approach than residential work: exterior stations, sealing of access points and documented follow-up rather than a one-off treatment.
& the Saint-Lucien area
The canal corridor, its locks and its marinas give wasps and hornets ideal cavities to nest in, and mosquitoes calm water to breed in. Terraces, sheds and boathouses are where our technicians remove the most nests between July and September.
The right treatment in Saint-Jean, pest by pest
We trace the trail back to the parent nest instead of treating the visible trail. Bait carried back by the workers, correction of the moisture source that made the wood vulnerable, gutter, sunroom or threshold, then a follow-up check. Without that correction the colony returns to the same spot the following year.
Inspection of entry points before any bait is placed: a mouse gets through a 6 mm opening. Mechanical sealing, secured exterior stations, removal of access routes. Sealing is what solves the problem, not the bait.
Inspection of the banks, drains, crawl spaces and foundations. Identification of the active burrows, blocking of access points, population control with secured stations. In riverside neighbourhoods the work goes from the outside in, never the other way around.
Full inspection, targeted or heat treatment depending on the case, a preparation plan handed over before the visit and a mandatory follow-up. In a rental building the treatment covers the adjoining units : treating a single apartment guarantees reinfestation. Discreet service.
Transfer bait gel, with no need to empty the cupboards or vacate the unit. In plexes and food service, coordinated treatment of the service chases and shared walls, with a service log handed over for your inspections.
Nest removed in a single visit in most cases, including a nest sitting inside a wall, under a cornice or in a boathouse. Aggression peaks in August and early September : that is when response time matters most.
What we check before treating
1. Exact identification. A carpenter ant and a black field ant call for neither the same product nor the same building diagnosis.
2. The cause, not the presence. Moisture, entry point, food source, immediate surroundings. Treating what you can see without correcting the cause only buys time.
3. The right product, in the right place. Only products approved by Health Canada and the PMRA, applied in the smallest effective quantity, by a technician holding the permits required in Quebec.
4. Written proof. Service report, products used, recommendations and a written guarantee offered depending on the treatment chosen. That document serves you as much for your insurer as for an inspection.

Pest Control Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu FAQ
How much does a pest control service cost in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu?
Answer:
The price depends on the pest, the area and the extent of the infestation. An ant treatment in a Saint-Luc bungalow and a bed bug infestation in a Vieux-Saint-Jean plex do not cost the same. The amount is confirmed before the work, never after. Call 1-866-499-6996.
Why are there so many rodents near the river and the canal?
Answer:
The banks of the Richelieu and the edges of the Chambly Canal give Norway rats exactly what they look for: soft soil to dig in, permanent water and waste nearby. The spring flood drowns their burrows and pushes them toward the basements of the riverside neighbourhoods of Vieux-Saint-Jean and Iberville. That is why sealing the access points is worth more here than any bait placed on its own.
Do you serve the Iberville, Saint-Luc, L'Acadie and Saint-Athanase sectors?
Answer:
Yes. We serve all five sectors of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu as well as the neighbouring municipalities of the Haut-Richelieu. The pest profile changes from one sector to the next: bank rodents in Iberville, field mice and groundhogs in the Saint-Luc developments, farm rodents in L’Acadie and Saint-Athanase. The treatment is adapted to the sector, not applied off the shelf.
How do I recognize carpenter ants in an older house downtown?
Answer:
Four signs: very fine wood dust at the base of baseboards or window frames, a rustling sound in the walls in the evening, large black workers 6 to 12 mm long moving around at night, and winged ants indoors in spring. In Vieux-Saint-Jean the starting point is almost always damp wood: a blocked gutter, a sunroom, a gallery or a door threshold. Have it inspected before the colony reaches the load-bearing structure.
Do you handle emergency wasp nests in summer?
Answer:
Yes, 7 days a week, including event weekends. Nests reach their maximum size in August and wasps become markedly more aggressive as fall approaches. A nest under a cornice, inside a wall or near a terrace is removed the same day in most cases. Call 1-866-499-6996.
How soon can you come?
Answer:
For an emergency, a wasp nest or a rodent intrusion, the target is same day or next day, 7 days a week. For an inspection or a preventive treatment, we schedule around your availability.
I am a tenant and I have bed bugs. Who pays?
Answer:
In Quebec, the landlord is required to provide a dwelling in good habitable condition, which includes pest control. It is the landlord’s responsibility to hire and pay the exterminator. The tenant must report the situation in writing and prepare the unit according to the instructions. In case of dispute, the recourse is the Tribunal administratif du logement. We provide the service report, which serves as evidence for both parties.
Do you treat businesses and restaurants?
Answer:
Yes. An integrated pest management program with scheduled inspections, a station map, a service log and reports that meet MAPAQ inspection requirements. That is the document the inspector asks for.
Does the whole building need treatment or just my unit?
Answer:
For bed bugs and cockroaches, the whole building, or at minimum the adjoining units and those connected by the same service chases. Treating a single unit moves the infestation, it does not eliminate it.
