Latin name> Camponotus spp.
Life> 7 to 17 years old
Length> 6 to 13mm
An insect of the formicidae family, carpenter ants belong, like wasps, to the order Hymenoptera. Like the latter, it wants to be a sociable insect living in an anthill where we can find a similar hierarchy composed of a queen, worker and warrior ants. Omnivorous, the species is often wrongly considered as xylophagous because of the damage it causes to wood. However, this one does not eat wood like termites, it only destroys it in its perpetual search for food.
What are the signs of presence of carpenter ants?
Particularly fond of moist and decaying wood, it is not uncommon to find nests in places where the wood is worn by time or humidity. Well established and without being dislodged, a nest of carpenter ants is capable of containing more than 3000! Therefore, if you see ants everywhere in and around your home, this is a sign of a long infestation. Check in priority the invasions in the foodstuffs, the carpenter ants being able to feed on everything. The presence of broken wood or fine sawdust on the ground is also a clear sign of the presence of a nest. Finally, while carpenter ants have wings, seeing a swarm outside will ensure the same result.
How to prevent the appearance of carpenter ants?
If you have land, avoid the accumulation of wood as a priority, whether by you or by nature, taking care to uproot old stumps in the vicinity. In the same vein, take special care not to have outdoor vegetation in direct contact with the structure of your home. For this one, avoid as much as possible the infiltrations and inherent moisture problems which are a horn sound for carpenter ants. Inside, keep your foodstuffs in airtight boxes and regularly check for possible presence in the wiring of your home. Finally, if you notice the presence of a nest, do not wait a second to call on the services of a professional exterminator.
